Message from the President of the French Republic on the occasion of the Spring Meeting of the Paris Peace Forum, 27 April 2020

I extend my warmest greetings to the Paris Peace Forum community gathered today to prepare its third edition next November in spite of the uncertainty and extraordinary circumstances of this year. My special thanks go to the Forum’s partners for their support. They are at the forefront of our efforts to invent a new diplomacy, better adapted to the global challenges we face.

The approach initiated in 2018, the “Paris Peace Forum method” if you will – strengthening multilateralism, integrating other players, coming together to push forward projects and initiatives and not just to discuss – appears, in the current conditions, more relevant than ever.

It must be used today to combat the Coronavirus pandemic and its aftermath, and I am delighted that you have decided to devote this third edition to it. I hope that the Forum will make it possible to catalyze new forms of cooperation and to launch joint initiatives by public and private actors to respond to the emergency and increase our resilience. I also hope that it will help to shape a post-health crisis world that is better regulated, less unequal and more sustainable.

I extend a special greeting to Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, who is with you today. The unprecedented partnership that we have just launched with the various actors in global health to accelerate the development, production and equitable distribution of the tools to combat COVID-19 is an example of the renewed multilateralism – effective, inclusive and expanded – that we need today in order to move forward.

To all of the actors of global governance – be they Heads of State, major foundations, businesses or civil society: I look forward to seeing you on 11 November in Paris, or perhaps online, depending on the conditions imposed on each of us – for the third edition of the Paris Peace Forum. The victory we will achieve over the Coronavirus will also be one of multilateralism, cooperation and solidarity.

Emmanuel Macron
