Guimet Museum of Paris Honours Rubaiyat Hossain

Musée Guimet (The Guimet Museum) in Paris awarded Rubaiyat Hossain’s ‘Under Construction’ this year at the festival international des cinémas d’Asie de Vesoul.


Rubaiyat Hossain is a young promising female filmmaker who tries to put the light on the inequalities and the consecutive sufferings of a woman in Bangladesh. This is an era when, world doesn’t count the gender behind the success, it’s the capability that matters. Although Bangladesh has also moved further with this vision, but still there are some dark corner, where women are treated in worst possible way. Rubiyat Hossain always tends to portrait these stories in her film with an intension to aware the society about these sorts of inequality practice and also to take steps for a better situation. Her debut feature film Meherjan (2011) faced a huge political and cultural wrath in Bangladesh for its antiwar narrative, and its critic of masculine nationalism from a feminine point of view. But that did not stop her from making the next one : Under Construction.

Musée Guimet honours the great discoverer of Asian cultures and every year they award Prix Emile Guimet to the director of a film which, besides its cinematic qualities, brings a remarkable cultural perspective on Asia. This year the award was given to Rubaiyat Hossain’s ‘Under Construction’ at the festival international des cinémas d’Asie de Vesoul. Established in 1879, the Guimet Museum has one of the largest collections of Asian art outside Asia.

PNG Rubaiyat Hossain is an interdisciplinary researcher. She has completed her B. A. in Women Studies from Smith College, USA, M. A. in South Asian Studies from University of Pennsylvania, USA. Her primary fields of interest are Sufism, Bengali nationalism, formation of Bengali modernity and its correlation with female sexuality. Rubaiyat Hossain has always been involved with different NGOs and worked for women’s right. She has been interested in film as since her early age. Later she pursued her interest seriously and completed a Diploma in Film Direction at New York Film Academy in 2002. Since then, she has made few short films that have screened at national and international film festivals. Rubaiyat is now working on script development for her next film, which would be a Bangladesh-France co-production.
