“Living and studying in France is an everlasting experience”Debashish Das, 35 years old, from Jessore, about his experience at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique, Paris, in 2012-2013

“I studied medicine and I was working as a malaria researcher in Bangkok. In 2012, I thought of doing a Master’s and chose the Master’s of Public Health program at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Santé Publique – EHESP (French School of Public Health) in France.

The MPH course, which is designed for both French and international students, is taught in English and one of the highly reputed programs in Europe. The tuition fees are more affordable compared to many other higher study programs in the UK and USA. In addition, studying and living in Paris is always like a dream; as Victor Hugo put it: “To study in Paris is to be born in Paris”.

However, Paris is an expensive city and finding an accommodation is quite challenging. As an international student, I had to find a place to live and to open a bank account at first place. In order to get a student accommodation, I had to manage a French guarantor and to submit an application to CROUS (Student Service Agency). I would like to thank Campus France for assisting me to find an accommodation and for providing all necessary information as needed.

The MPH course I attended was multinational and multicultural. It was a great platform to exchange and share culture, ideas and views among public health professionals from all over the world. The program also involved a 6-month internship which provided hands on research experience. I received a 4-month research scholarship from the French Embassy in Bangladesh right after completion of my MPH. The scholarship allowed me to continue public health research as a visiting fellow at Epidemiology Department, EHESP, and to apply for a PhD program.

In my opinion, France is an exciting destination for higher studies (both master and doctoral programs), due to its standard of education and high quality research activities. The world’s most visited city, Paris offers unique culture, art, music, beauty, museums, and so on.

To experience and explore the history and culture of France, knowing basics of French language is essential. It is wise to learn French before coming over for higher studies. Living and studying in France is an everlasting experience. As Ernest Hemingway said: “If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life, it stays with you, for Paris is a movable feast”.”
